Artic’s Impactful STEM and Careers Days
At Artic Building Services, we firmly believe in nurturing the next generation of engineers and breaking down barriers that maybe holding them back. Recently, we had the incredible opportunity to engage with young minds during STEM and Careers Days held at local schools, including Wilmington Academy and Dartford Science and Technology College. These events allowed us to showcase the exciting world of STEM apprenticeship careers and encourage students to explore the diverse opportunities within the engineering industry. In all our events we underline how Artic, and our Industry is evolving to be leaders in positively addressing and providing tangible innovations to key Energy, Sustainability and Compliance subject matters.
Wilmington Academy – June 7th, 17th, and 18th
We began on June 7th at Wilmington Academy, where we teamed up with the RAF sidecar team to inspire year 9 students. Together, we ignited their curiosity by discussing various career pathways within STEM and introduced them to Artic’s exceptional apprenticeship scheme. Witnessing the students’ enthusiasm was heartwarming, and to add an element of thrill, we let them get into the sidecar, creating an exciting buzz of excitement. It was an incredible experience interacting with both boys and girls, highlighting the importance of diversity in the industry.
On July 17th, we returned to Wilmington Academy for a Careers Day, joining forces with other local businesses to showcase the endless possibilities in apprenticeships on offer within all our Dept’s available to year 12 students upon leaving school. The event aimed to provide valuable insights into the vast world of engineering and support students in making informed decisions about their future careers.
Additionally, on June 18th, we participated in Mock Interviews, where we had the privilege of sitting with a group of students in a mock interview setting. We offered them effective feedback and guidance on interview techniques, empowering them with essential skills for their future.
Dartford Science and Technology College – June 19th
On June 19th, we visited Dartford Science and Technology College, an all-girls school, alongside the RAF sidecar Team. This event was especially significant to us as we aimed to inspire young women to explore the exciting opportunities and apprenticeships on offer to them within our engineering and other Dept’s fields. The core message we focused on was how our Industry and Artic need the benefit, expertise, and positive impact from young women within our workplace, especially within field positions. Witnessing the students getting into the sidecar, filled us with pride, knowing that we were fostering their interest in STEM careers. The event comprised five groups of year 9 girls, and their enthusiasm and passion were truly inspiring. We also heard from a team of students who were recently recognised for their innovative presentation and award-winning proposal for a Flight Simulator designed for individuals with disabilities, a project with which we would want to provide our full support on.
Impactful Feedback
The impact of these events on the students was heartening, and we received positive feedback that reinforced the significance of our efforts:
“The careers event was very informative and helpful to me in deciding what path to take in the future. I am strongly leaning towards being an engineer for the Royal Air Force.”
“The open day was amazing; I just wished it was longer. I was very interested in the work they do.”
“I really enjoyed the STEM workshop; it helped me look at what I want to do when I’m older and has opened up more options for me. Thank you also for setting this up for us!”
“Thank you very much; it was very interesting.”
The students were highly engaged during the events, asking insightful questions, and expressing interest in different pathways and careers, including mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, and aviation roles in the RAF.
Artic’s Commitment to Encouraging Young Talent
At Artic, we are dedicated to nurturing young talent and providing opportunities for aspiring engineers to excel. Our previous event at North Kent College resulted in the successful enrolment of two apprentices who have been with Artic since January and will be starting their college courses in September in AC and Electrical.
This year, we hope to build upon our efforts to encourage more students, especially young women, to explore a rewarding career in engineering and break the stereotypes that may limit their potential.
Through our STEM and Careers Days, we aim to inspire the engineers of tomorrow, providing them with a glimpse of the dynamic world of engineering and igniting their passion for innovation. Together, let us shape a brighter future for aspiring engineers, empowering them to thrive in the ever-evolving world of STEM.
