The Day in the Life of An Artic Engineer

Artic Building Services is excited to reveal a day in the life of one of our talented engineers. During the week, we organised to spend the day with one of our expert engineers on a leading commercial site. Jack Cumby has been on his journey with Artic for three years and has become an embodiment of the excellent service Artic delivers to clients across all commercial facilities management solutions.

Meet Jack Cumby

Jack Cumby started at Artic Building Services as an apprentice in 2021 and has been building his career as a successful electrical engineer ever since. As an apprentice, he worked alongside qualified Artic engineers, absorbing the knowledge and experience to become the talented engineer he is today. For Jack, the future holds progression in not only the electrical trade, but also the potential to expand into different trades and Artic looks forward to supporting his continued development.

As a static Electrical Engineer, Jack is a valued member of the Artic team at commercial site Lord’s Cricket Ground. As an engineer, his role includes attending both regular maintenance and reactive call outs across site to keep daily operations running smoothly. Jack has become a reliable and friendly face to the workers at Lord’s, as he continues to be a strong representative of the Artic values.

Being depended on for the operational capacity of facilities on a site can come with immense pressure, especially on sites with unique demands. Match days at Lord’s can be challenging, with pressure at its highest for Lord’s to deliver the best experience to the public, this is where Artic engineers are an asset to the delivery of high-quality, commercial facilities management.

How Do You Start Your Morning?

Typically, my morning is an early start as I have to make sure I’m out the door by seven. My usual commute to Lord’s Cricket Ground is driving my electric van into the centre of London or taking the underground to the nearest tube station, whatever is easiest on the day.

When I get to site, I’ll always meet my team in the on-site office. It can be hectic when everyone first arrives, so it takes you a couple minutes to settle in. To start my day, I’ll always check my work phone as it has all my tasks already loaded onto it, telling me what I’ll be doing and where, so I know what PPE I’ll need.

What Does a Typical Workday Look Like for You?

A typical day for me would mean a lot of maintenance, flushing and water temperatures, recording and reporting readings to protect people from legionella which is a big risk. I’m an electrician but after working with older engineers who have experience in other trades, I’ve picked up a few different skills. There’s a lot of reactive jobs as well, you do get a big variety of work so you never really get bored and it’s all important for making sure the site will run smoothly for match days. Day to day I like speaking to the clients, seeing them appreciate what we do is a nice feeling.

What Does a Match Day Look Like at Lord’s?

Match days at Lord’s are definitely the best days. They are busy and there is a lot of work, but the atmosphere that the stadium produces is amazing and you don’t feel like you’re working. Trying to squeeze through the crowds of happy people who are glad to see you there, fixing their chair or letting them out of a stuck lock. They’re all super appreciative and you get a lot of job satisfaction because it feels good to help people. They sometimes even let me get a sneaky peak at the game!

What is it Like to Work in Your Team?

The team are great, you get to have a good laugh with them. There’s a lot of banter so you don’t necessarily feel like you’re at work all the time. We’re all hard working and being a part of a team at Artic means you’re listened to and understood, my team have always helped me when they can.

How Does Your Day End?

My day tends to end back in the on-site office with my manager. We will go through what’s happened in the day and I’ll finish filling out any reports I need to on my phone. When it finally hits five o’clock, I’ll pack everything away and head home!

Rounding Up the Day:

Finishing the day at Lord’s Cricket Ground Jack headed home tired but satisfied.
