Introduction

Artic is thrilled to share the recent success of refurbishing the A&E Paediatrics ward at King’s College Hospital (KCH). This comprehensive overhaul included upgrading ventilation systems, installing a new ceiling, upgrading the AHU, associated pipework, and redecorating the entire ward.

Artic’s Relationship with King’s College Hospital

Artic is proud of our partnership with King’s College Hospital Denmark Hill (KCH) since 1998, and it has only grown stronger over time. Today, we are responsible for providing both planned and reactive maintenance services to approximately 6,000 assets.  As a partnered supplier to King’s, we deliver HVAC and compliance services to the estate covering over 500,000 sqm. This enduring partnership not only reflects our commitment but also laid the foundation for our involvement in the A&E Paediatrics ward refurbishment.

Key Highlights

Temporary ward relocation: To ensure minimal impact on patient care, the existing ward operations were carefully relocated, allowing for an ambitious 8-week refurbishment window.

AHU Upgrade and Precision Lifting: The existing AHU, no longer compliant or fit for purpose, was decommissioned, and replaced. Supported by a specialist lifting contractor, the team executed a seamless installation of the new unit onto the roof on a Sunday to minimise disruptions.

Ductwork and Mechanical Ventilation: Utilising the incumbent building contractor, responsible for ceiling removal, our ductwork specialists undertook the task of stripping out the existing mechanical ventilation system, which minimised the risk of delay to the project.

Safeguarding Room: Within the scope of works, Artic played a crucial role in designing and installing a safeguarding room. Equipped with anti-ligature fixtures and CCTV for constant surveillance, this room is dedicated to the protection of vulnerable children and staff.

Interior Modernisation: Following the first fix of the ventilation system, a new ceiling was installed, and the ward underwent a complete aesthetic transformation – hygienic wall cladding, refurbished doors, bespoke flooring, and improved sustainable lighting was all completed within the short programme.

Challenges and Solutions

Acting as the Principal Contractor, we managed a diverse range of trades, ensuring 24-hour working during the shutdown period. Upgrading ductwork to meet standards (HTM03-01) involved installing a new MSFD system, heater batteries, grilles, and digital magnehelic gauges. We also added an access gantry around the AHU for easier maintenance.

Technological Upgrades

New chilled and heating pipework was connected to the AHU for efficient climate control. The fire strategy was reviewed, and additional measures implemented. In the Drug Storeroom, a modern DX AC system was installed for precise temperature control of stored medications. A new Building Management System (BMS) panel was installed, providing the hospital trust with complete control over the ventilation system and climate.

Successful Completion

Artic successfully completed the refurbishment within the 8-week timeframe, meeting the client’s deadline. As a small gesture, to enhance the children’s experience, Artic donated and installed a new TV and DVD player in the ward, contributing to a more comforting and enjoyable environment for young patients.
